Domain name services provide clients the opportunity to list domain names. Domain names are very important for a business. Domain names are often referred to as domains. And domain owners are called domain registrants.
Domain name services fall under two types: generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and country code top-level domains (cTLDs). Examples of gTLDs are .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, etc.. The domanin name services need to be approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). For cTLDs, it is the country or territory that assigns specific domain name services. Often, these services are also gTLDs.
Generic domain names such as business.com or movies.com are highly sought-after because of their marketing and advertising potentials. They are also easy to recall. Internet users often frequent sites that are easy to remember.
Upon registering a domain name, the domain name you choose will be logged into the domain name system (DNS) and assigned an IP (internet protocol) address. Also, the domain registration services will require the owner of the new domain to provide some personal information. This information is entered in the WHOIS database. Your personal information such as name, address, email and others will then be seen by the public.
Domain registration services often do not just offer one service. Some domain name registrars may also be web hosts. That is why often you can get the domain name for free if you avail of the web hosting plans.
So how does one register a domain name? When registering your domain name, the first step would be to go to the domain name service site and check if the domain name is available. Or you can use the WHOIS site to do the search.
If the domain name is available which means someone has not bought it, then you can register it in a domain name service by paying a fee. If the name is already in use, then you should come up with another similar name. Like, if you want to use mycity and mycity is already taken then mytown or myplace would be an option.
You can register the domain name for up to ten years. As mentioned earlier, you need to provide personal information in registering such as name and email address. You also need to decide if you want to avail of other services. Then you have to provide the ISP (internet service provider) you choose.
Once you register a domain name, you actually just buy a lease from the domain registration services. You do not own the domain name permanently. You can only use it up to a certain period. However, you can renew your domain name once it expires for as long as you want.
Once the registration period is up, domain registration services will send you a reminder to renew the domain name. If you do not renew, the name will be available for others to use.
Domain registrants also allow clients to transfer the domain name to another domain name service or registrar. However, some rules or limitations may apply. They may also charge fees for this. You need to inquire from the registrar what to do if you want to transfer the domain name.
