How to Network Computers On Dial-Up
Those who know what dial up networking is may also know what it means to try to use dial up networking with two different computers. Dial up networking started with Windows 98 and allows you to connect your computer to a network while using a modem. Assuming that the computer in question is not connected to a LAN (local area network), you will need to configure your dial-up networking and log into your Internet service provider (ISP). In addition, it is possible to network your entire household using dial-up. This has its advantages and disadvantages. Other than that, connecting a network and creating a network is simple and should not cause any problems. In fact, it is used to solve existing problems and make things easier, albeit a little slower.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Networking Computers on Dial-Up
- When sharing a network, files containing music, videos, and other such documents can be easily shared and accessed.
- When connecting everyone in your network to the Internet, be aware that the speed of your Internet access may be somewhat slow.
Before beginning on connecting networks, check your host computer. Your host computer is almost always the computer that is already connected to the Internet via dial-up connection. If you have not yet connected your host computer to a dial-up connection, do this before setting up your network. You can do this by signing up for a dial-up Internet service. After you have done this you will be given a username and password. You will also need to connect your phone cable to the line jack of the modem on your host computer. This will be done after you have set up your connection to the ISP. Before even setting up your dial-up connection and trying to add a network, you will need a router.
Setting Up Your Dial-Up Connection
- You will need to make sure that your wireless router is connected to the phone outlet. You also need to make sure that the power is on.
- After you have done this, start up your computer’s wireless connection manager. You should be able to find this after clicking “Start”, then “Connect To”. Find your connection and start that connection. Make sure it is the right one, or else you will be connecting to someone else’s Internet connection.
- Click on your Internet browser shortcut. After you have done this, the router configuration page should appear. You will then need to provide your ISP. You can do this by searching for your ISP in the list provided for you. If it is listed, your access number will already appear in the appropriate box. If it has not, you will need to manually enter your ISP access number.
- After you have done this, provide your username and password and click “Dial Now”. You were given this when you purchased your ISP.
After you have set up the connection for your host computer, connect the two computers to your router. You can do this by getting two Ethernet cables and connecting them to your router. At this point, you will be switching between your host computer and the client, which is the other computer in the network you plan on creating.
Creating Your Network on Dial-Up
- Go to your host computer. Click on “Start”, “Control Panel”, and “Network Connections”. When you have found your Internet connection, right click on it and select the “Advanced” tab.
- From this tab, there will be a few options available. Search for the heading “Internet Connections”. Under this heading, find the option that is labeled “Allow other network users to connect through this computer”. Click “OK”. Before selecting “Yes” at the next step, jot down the IP address and then continue, if you have not already.
- After you have finished your work on your host computer, proceed to the client computer. From this computer, click on “Start”, “Control Panel”, “Internet Connections”, and “Local Area Network”. Find the “Local Area Network” option and right click on it. From there, you will need to click on “Properties”, then the “General” tab.
- Next, find “Internet Protocol”, click on it and then go to the properties section. In the TCP/IP section, or Internet Protocol window, click on “Obtain an IP address automatically”.
- When you have done this, you have finished networking your computers. The only thing left for you to do is set up your connection by using the New Connections Wizard on your client computer. By doing this, go to “Start”, “Control Panel”, and “Network Connections”. Double click on the “New Connections Wizard” and follow the instructions you are given from there.
Creating a network for your computers are fairly simple. Because they are connected to each other, it is possible to share the same Internet connection, which saves time and money when using a dial-up connection. Dial-up routers make things fairly simple. Once you know what you want to do, it is easy to accomplish your Internet connection and home network.
