Apple’s introduction of the original iPod in 2001 revolutionized an industry, and it marked the death of the portable CD player. Since its inception, the iPod has sold over 22 million units, making it the highest-selling digital audio player in history.
But Apple’s current lineup of iPods remains expensive. According to the Apple website, the 160-gb iPod Classic will set you back $249. Their least expensive iPod, the 2-gb iPod Shuffle, costs $59, but does not include a screen of any kind (volume buttons are located on the headphones, and rather than an LED display, a computerized voice lets you know what song is playing).
If you can’t afford a brand new iPod this year, don’t abandon hope. The mobile digital audio market may be supersaturated with generic, sub-par mp3 players, but there are also plenty of quality MP3 players on the market that won’t burn a three-figure whole in your wallet. Below are a few great cheap MP3 players.
SanDisk Sansa C250 2GB Multimedia MP3 Player ($26.99-40.00)
At only 3.0″ x 1.0″, the Sansa boasts a 64k color LCD screen, a built-in microphone for voice recording, and a micro SD expansion slot for added storage space. Overall, the Sansa is an excellent value for the price. As of January 11, 2010, I was able to find a refurbished Sansa online for only $26.99.
Samsung U5 2GB MP3 player ($29.00-40.00)
The U5 is a tiny MP3 player from Samsung. The unit includes a 128 x 64 pixel OLED screen, a built-in battery, and an embedded microphone for audio recording. The U5 also includes an FM tuner, which is a bonus for anyone who wants to use their MP3 player to listen to the radio. You can find the U5 for under $40.00.
Philips GoGear ViBE 4GB Portable AV Player ($33.49-$79.00)
With a 1.5″ full-color LED screen, a sleek black design, and an intuitive user interface, the GoGear ViBE is an excellent value, even at the list price of about $70.00. However, you can find a refurbished ViBE at overstock.com for under $40.00.
Creative Labs Zen Mozaic 2 GB Black MP3 Player ($54.99-$97.99)
The Zen Mozaic is a uniquel MP3 player from Creative Labs. The player has excellent sound quality, great battery life, and a unique customizable user interface. The unit also boasts an FM-tuner, an embedded microphone, a built in speaker, and photo and video supports. All in all, the Mozaic offers a great bang for your buck. I found the Mozaic on the Internet for $54.99.
