Even though motorcycles are a secondary form of transportation for most owners, the cost of insuring a motorcycle is higher than insuring a car. Cheap motorcycle insurance may be difficult to find. But you can take steps to keep your insurance costs down.
The motorcycle you buy can determine how much your insurance will cost. For example, insurance for a sports model will cost more than insuring a cruiser type motorcycle.
When shopping for motorcycle insurance, don’t assume that all insurance companies will offer you the same quote. Shop around and compare different plans and choose one that meets your needs and offers a great deal.
Go to an independent insurance agent who specializes in motorcycle insurance. They will have the most comprehensive information about the plans available and will best be able to advise on how to save some money.
If you are a new motorcycle driver who has been in an accident, take motorcycle driving classes. Insurance companies give discounts to drivers who do.
“Lay up” insurance is an option for drivers who do not ride their motorcycle at all during the winter months. Coverage is suspended during the off months and saves drivers money.
Insurance companies also consid where you store your bike. If you keep your motorcycle in the garage or in a shed, your insurance rates will be less than if you park it on the street.
Limiting the number of miles you drive your motorcycle per year can also keep your insurance premiums down.
Request a higher deductible and you will be able to get a lower premium.
Decrease your coverage if you have an older motorcycle. It may not be worthwhile to get the best collision coverage for a bike that only has a few years left on it.
Don’t send in small claims for minor dents and scratches. You may get some money to repair them but you will see your insurance premiums rise.
If you don’t plan to allow others to ride your bike, remove the guest passenger liability coverage.
Insurance companies also consider your credit report so, make sure to take steps to keep your credit score high.
Be a safe driver. This is the best way to make sure that you are offered cheap motorcycle insurance premiums that are not increased in the future.
